Fuel dilution is an important consideration in engine oil performance, and ultimately one of the key reasons oil changes are required. Gas chromatography is the currently-accepted method for determining fuel dilution in engine oils. Although workable, it is not practical from the standpoint of obtaining timely, real-time fuel dilution data.
In these environmentally conscious times, governments all over the world are looking at ways to reduce our dependence on petroleum products. The leading alternative today is the development of alternative fuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. New legislation is coming into effect requiring a certain percentage of fuel be composed of these alternatives.
Thermal-Lube’s CONTINUOUS FUEL DILUTION ANALYZER (CFDA) is a state-of-the-art system that uses Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Spectroscopy and proprietary U.M.P.I.R.E.IA® software to automatically monitor and analyze the oil condition in a test cell environment. It has been designed to work with all engine types, including those running on biodiesel and ethanol fuels. This gives designers of engines, fuel, and lubricants valuable real-time data on the physical and chemical effects of these new fuels interacting with the engine oil.
